FinTech Innovation – the hottest topic in Finance EBS University offers a new module for the MSc Finance

Prof. Rasa Karapandza was able to reunite top founders, investors and tough leaders from the FinTech arena so that EBS students can develop theoretical and practical understanding of the forces transforming financial services globally. Students will learn about many entrepreneurial challenges, demystifying social media buzz words like blockchain, AI, roboadvisory and Fintech in general and will be learning from real cases and from FinTech leaders that are transforming the world of financial services.

FinTech innovation is the hottest topic in Financial Services and touches all aspects of industry transformation. Digitizing a financial institution or competing with established players requires an interdisciplinary approach. Successful FinTech entrepreneurs and investors need to possess knowledge on 3 key areas: Finance (quantitative methods and behavioral finance), Technology (artificial intelligence, blockchain, API) and Regulation (MIFID2, PSD2, GRDP) to be capable of creating or evaluating innovative business models that can generate revenues. The following FinTech Managers will come to teach at EBS:

Benjamin Bilski, Founder of Naga Group

Born in 1988, Benjamin is a serial internet entrepreneur. He co-founded The Naga Group AG and took it public in July 2017 only 21 months after its incorporation. The company is listed on the Frankfurt Stock exchange with a market cap of €300m (Nov. 2017) and is one of Europe´s fastest growing FinTechs. Being 21yrs. old, Benjamin founded Germany´s leading e-shop for fishing & outdoor equipment (7 digit annual revenue) and later created SwipeStox - a social network for stock traders while he was completing his MSc. in Management at the EBS University. He is an expert in transforming ideas into real scalable products, building technology and building teams with a high execution pace. Benjamin built own e-commerce platforms, social network apps, FinTech apps as well as block chain-projects. He also has an extensive knowledge in the Forex/CFD industry having built up an entire brokerage with Naga Markets Ltd. Benjamin is a former German swimming champion and was part of the German National Team in swimming.

Sebastian Diemer, Founder and CEO of Finiata

Sebastian holds a BSc from European Business School and a MSc from London School of Economics (2010). Having gained operational experience at Rocket Internet by building Groupon China, he and his co-founder founded, scaled and sold one of the largest European FinTech companies (400 employees, over EUR 150mn venture capital raised) for over EUR 250mn between 2012 and 2017. Since then, he is an active angel investor, FinTech speaker and industry expert and has started a new company, Finiata, which has the vision to provide small businesses across Europe with working capital based on automated decisions and new data sources. Finiata has risen over EUR 10mn in venture capital in the first 12 months and currently employs 45 professionals.

Prof. Raša Karapandža, EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht

Raša Karapandža (born January 4, 1978) is a professor of finance at European Business School. He serves as an academic director of Master in Finance program and holds a chair of finance at EBS Business School. Raša holds a visiting professorship at NYU at their Abu Dhabi campus. He holds a PhD degree in economics and finance from Barcelona Graduate School of Economics – University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. He was a visiting research scholar at the NYU and at UC Berkeley. Prof. Karapandza serves as an advisor to the members of the US Congress on the topics related to the regulation of crypto-currencies and other blockchain related technologies.

Dr. Pawel Krawchenko, Founder of ditributed-lab and FinTech Expert

Dr. Pavel Kravchenko, a cryptographer, holds PhD in technical sciences and is the founder of the Distributed Lab, a Centre for the development of blockchain solutions for financial markets. From 2006 to 2009, Pavel worked as a security engineer at one of the leading security companies in Ukraine. From 2009 to 2013, Pavel was team leader and project manager for several IT projects, including being responsible for Rabobank’s mobile application development. Pavel started his blockchain and cryptocurrencies career and research at the Silicon Valley startup, Stellar. In 2014 Pavel co-founded Distributed Lab, a venture dedicated to advancing the cryptocurrency and blockchain state of the art through independent R&D, government projects, collaborations with national universities, and standard-setting initiatives. Beyond operating as a successful business, Distributed Lab has as a core mission developing cutting-edge enterprise tokenization solutions, laying the groundwork for the up-coming “Financial Internet”.

Robert Lacher, Founder of LaFamiglia

Robert is founding partner of LaFamiglia, a venture capital firm that is backed by family owned companies and their next generation, leading European entrepreneurs, and business angels. He is Founder of fashion platform AMAZE which he sold to Zalando in 2016. Prior to that, he worked for The Boston Consulting Group in its Munich office, focusing on the development of new digital business models for international clients in the consumer, automotive and TMT industry. Previously he worked for BCG and studied engineering and business at RWTH Aachen, University of Cambridge, Harvard University and the Imperial College London.

John Mullin, Senior Analyst Guotai Junan

John Mullin is a Senior Research Analyst at the Guotai Junan Securities & Finance Institute. John currently focuses his research on FinTech, being a FinTech generalist, covering AI/ML, Blockchain and cryptocurrencies, P2P lending, etc. Prior to joining Guotai Junan in 2016, he completed a double Master of Science in Management and Economics at EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht, in Germany and Tongji University in China. In addition to working for Guotai Junan, John is an active member of the FinTech community, where he serves as Community Partner for the FinTech Connector in his spare time. Additionally, John is a writer/blogger, and writes about his experience working in the Chinese financial sector for LinkedIn China, and about cryptocurrencies and FinTech innovation for CoinTelegraph. He is also a FinTech and ICO advisor, and is influential in the FinTech space advising several blockchain companies.

Paolo Sironi, FinTech Thought Leader / Author, IBM Industry Academy - Watson Financial Services

Paolo is elective member of IBM Industry Academy and recognized bestselling author of Financial Technology, Investments and Risk Management. He advises the industry with strategic insights about digital transformation and innovative business models by linking investment practices (FIN), financial technology (TECH), banking and insurance regulations (REG). Paolo formerly held senior positions in risk management and investment banking; he owns a track record as FinTech startup entrepreneur. Heiko Schwender, Senior Investment Manager at Commerz Ventures

Heiko is a Principal Manager and one of the founding members of CommerzVentures. An investment banker by trade with a passion for technology innovation, he has been providing corporate finance advice to tech companies and banks for years. He continued his career at Commerzbank’s group strategy department, where he co-headed the overarching digitization and innovation topics for the bank, before kicking off CommerzVentures in October 2014. Heiko is a mentor with Startup Bootcamp Fintech and FinTech Innovation Lab in London and holds an MBA from the prestigious University of Chicago Booth Business School.

Maximilian Tayenthal, Founder and CFO N26

Maximilian, born in Vienna, studied Business Administration, International Management, and Law in Vienna, Rotterdam and Paris. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder. Before founding N26, he worked as a strategy consultant with Booz & Company, as assistant to the CFO in an Austria’s largest insurance company, and gained experiences in Corporate M&A in a law firm.
