In our series #EBSInternViews, we provide insights into the internships our students have completed during their semester break. Lena Hesseldieck talks about her time at KPMG – a leading auditing and consulting firm in Germany.

Why did you choose this company?

KPMG is one of the big four audit firms, so I was chiefly interested in this company’s internationality and size. My academic strengths lie in accounting and finance and when I tried to combine both, I found just the right mix in KPMG’s Transaction Services.

Could you describe your scope of activity to us?

I had the opportunity to support various teams on projects and was able to participate in so-called due diligences, both on the buyer and seller side. This involves carefully checking all available data provided by the parties and reducing risks. For example, I created analysis data on deviations between the year-end report and management reporting on the accounts of the profit and loss statement, accruals and liabilities at company level.

Lessons learned?

In addition to the technical lessons, such as the further improvement of my Excel know-how, I was able to learn both the process of a simple due diligence as well as the complete sequence of a sales process in the international arena, and what is important in a large-scale acquisition project.
