Prof. Dr. Michael Weller has been Practice Professor of Banking Law, Capital Markets Law and International Business Law since 1 December 2018. He is co-director of the LLM Programme Master of Global Business Law.
Prof. Dr. Weller studied law at Goethe Universität in Frankfurt am Main, graduating with the First State Examination in 1980. There he completed his legal clerkship at the OLG in Frankfurt am Main. He passed the examination for the second state examination in 1982.
Prof. Dr. Weller then joined Prof. Dr. Axel Flessner at Goethe Universität as a research assistant at the Institute for Foreign and International Commercial and Business Law. In 1984 he received his doctorate in law for his dissertation “Das Kreditkartenverfahren” (The Credit Card Procedure), which was awarded the Walter Kolb Prize of the City of Frankfurt am Main.
From 1985 to 1992, Prof. Dr. Weller worked as a lawyer at Deutsche Bank Luxembourg. There he was mainly responsible for international financings and the development of the private client and fund business.
In 1992, Prof. Dr. Weller joined the international law firm Clifford Chance in Frankfurt am Main as a lawyer (Rechtsanwalt). He mainly represented German and international credit and financial institutions in international credit and capital market transactions and in their own organisation. His work in the firm’s German and international Legal Opinion Committee was characterized by academic standards. He retired in 2016.
In addition to his work as a lawyer, Prof. Dr. Weller has held teaching positions - since 2002 at the Institute for Law and Finance at Goethe Universität and since 2014 at EBS Universität - until he accepted a professorship at EBS Universität.
