CTED is a joint research center equally operated by New York University (Abu Dhabi & New York) and EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht.
Led by Prof. Yaw Nyarko (NYU) and Prof. Raša Karapandža (EBS/NYU), CTED develops innovative, technology-driven solutions to address critical economic challenges in sub-Saharan Africa.
About us
Vision and Mission
Our mission is to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth by combining cutting-edge technologies, rigorous economic research, and local expertise.
We envision African communities where farmers have reliable access to markets, land governance is transparent, financial tools are broadly available, and cultural heritage strengthens identity, education, and tourism.
Focus areas
Our work spans four key areas:
- Financial Access & Market Integration for Farmers
- Blockchain for Financial Inclusion
- Enhancing Land Administration & Governance
- Art, Tourism, & Cultural Heritage Development
Projects in our key areas
Financial Access & Market Integration for Farmers
Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa often face severe barriers to accessing finance and markets. CTED has introduced pioneering solutions such as Ghana’s first Commodity Exchange (GCX), the Market Place app for direct farmer-to-buyer transactions, and localized nano exchanges. These initiatives, alongside innovative input credit systems, have empowered more than 50,000 farmers to increase productivity, stabilize incomes, and benefit from transparent pricing.

Blockchain for Financial Inclusion
Millions of farmers remain excluded from formal financial services. To address this, CTED has developed blockchain-based mobile applications that provide secure digital tokens, mobile credit facilities, and insurance products. Enhanced with AI-driven advisory tools, these platforms reduce transaction costs and increase financial security. As a result, previously unbanked farmers are able to participate more fully in local and global economies.

Enhancing Land Administration & Governance
Land administration in Ghana has traditionally been slow, opaque, and prone to disputes. In collaboration with the Kumawu Traditional Council, CTED has developed a digital land management system that combines GIS mapping, drone technology, and blockchain-based verification. This work has already digitized 25,000 paper records and mapped 2% of Ghana’s landmass. The outcome is greater tenure security, more efficient transactions, and stronger foundations for sustainable development.

Art, Tourism, & Cultural Heritage Development
Cultural heritage represents both a source of identity and an engine for economic growth. Through the Kumawu Museum Network, CTED has established eight cultural sites, integrated UNESCO heritage landmarks, and supported the creation of over 200 artworks. These initiatives preserve history while also driving sustainable tourism, generating employment, and creating new opportunities for local communities.

Our Highlights
- Supporting 10,000 smallholder farmers today, expanding to 50,000 across Ghana.
- Digitized 25,000 land records and mapped 2 % of Ghana’s landmass using a blockchain-backed GIS system.
- Established eight cultural heritage sites (including a UNESCO site) and supported 200+ new artworks.
- Developed blockchain-based apps to bring millions of unbanked farmers into the formal financial system.
- Team of 30+ researchers across five locations: New York, Abu Dhabi, Accra, Kumawu (Ghana) and Oestrich-Winkel.
- Awards & Grants: Falling Walls 2024 Social Sciences and Humanities Prize (Nyarko); Gates Foundation “Aim for Scale” Grant; IEA Fellow Award; UBRI/SVCF Blockchain Research Grant.
Our goal
CTED aims to transform innovative research into long-term, self-sustaining impact. Building on our field projects in Ghana and beyond, we are expanding blockchain-based financial inclusion to reach more than 50,000 farmers, while also broadening agricultural credit access to an additional 20,000. At the same time, we continue to digitize land records and explore the introduction of carbon credit systems as new opportunities for sustainable growth.
Our overarching goal is to create an ecosystem in which communities can grow and thrive without dependence on external aid. By combining technology, economics, and cultural heritage, CTED fosters resilience and inclusive development that endures.
