EBS Law School Graduate Among the Top Law Graduates in Hesse
Once again, a graduate of EBS Law School has achieved one of the highest examination results in the State of Hesse.

In 2025, Alexander Rieß passed the First State Examination in Law with a score of 14.26 points and a grade of “very good.” This placed him third out of 727 successful graduates. His other degrees from EBS Universität were also marked by outstanding achievements: Rieß completed his Bachelor of Laws with a score of 12.84 points, ranking first in his class. In the Master’s in Business for Legal Professionals program, he also ranked first in his class of 19 graduates with an overall grade of 1.3. He was also awarded a prize from Clifford Chance for the best bachelor’s thesis and the highest overall academic achievement.
Born and raised in Lübeck, he was already interested in both legal and economic issues even before he began his studies. It was precisely the opportunity to combine both disciplines that led him to EBS. In addition to studying law, he earned a Bachelor of Laws and a Master in Business for Legal Professionals there. His time as a student was also shaped by the integrated semester abroad and his involvement in student organizations.
Rieß cites a solid foundation from his undergraduate studies, as well as organization, discipline, and perseverance, as key factors in his success on the state exam. Another key factor, he says, is the willingness to critically analyze one’s own performance and learn from mistakes. In this regard, EBS’s in-house review course also provided him with a solid foundation.
His academic interests focus particularly on legal issues at the intersection of business and finance, including corporate and capital markets law, insolvency and restructuring, and corporate finance. He is now continuing his academic career at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law. Since February 2026, he has been working there as a research assistant to Professor Holger Fleischer, pursuing a doctorate on conflict-laden corporate transactions under stock corporation law. His research combines law and economics with comparative legal perspectives.
