Animal welfare activists in court - Workshop day for prospective students

17. July 2018, Wiesbaden

In this workshop you will be given an insight into the role of judge, prosecutor and defence counsel and will deal with the question of whether civil disobedience can be punishable.

There are unsustainable conditions in an animal breeding facility that blatantly violate applicable law. However, the public authorities remain inactive. Three courageous activists penetrate the stables and document the conditions there on film in order to draw the public’s attention to the abuses and to put a swift end to them - for the welfare of the animals. Soon after, however, they themselves become the target of the investigators: The public prosecutor’s office accuses them of trespassing (§ 123 StGB). The competent court opens the main public hearing against the three animal friends. The air for the activists is getting thin, but they are holding against it and arguing that the citizen must intervene if the state fails.

Immerse yourself in a real criminal trial, take on the roles of judge, prosecutor and defence counsel. Get to know the roles mentioned under expert guidance and develop your own legal argumentation. In the end, your vote decides: acquittal or conviction.
