Overview of doctoral studies at EBS Law School

On 23 August 2011, the Hesse Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK) awarded EBS the status "Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht" and EBS Law School was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees and post-doctoral qualifications (Habilitation).

This opened up the opportunity for the Law Faculty to make a significant contribution towards an essential element of university research by promoting young researchers. At EBS Law School students are able to gain a doctorate in law (Dr. iur.)

The requirements for admittance to doctoral studies at EBS Law School and details of the programme are set out in the Promotionsordnung and are briefly outlined below:

  1. Suitable academic qualification
    To be accepted as a doctoral student at EBS Law School applicants are generally required to have above-average results in the first or second state examination in law (fully satisfactory = vollbefriedigend)
  2. Other qualifications
    Applicants with qualifications other than those stipulated in 1. (e.g. a satisfactory pass in the state examinations; a Diploma or a Master's degree in law; an academic qualification in other disciplines and academic qualifications gained abroad), are required to present proof of additional qualifications (e.g. proof of language proficiency, seminar and written examinations).   3. Assignment of a supervising professor
    Doctoral studies at EBS Law School follow the traditional model where students are assigned to a supervising professor.   6. Doctoral thesis
  7. Submission of doctoral thesis and initiation of doctoral examination process (§ 9 PromO)
  8. Assessment of the doctoral thesis; thesis made available to University community for a specific period of time (§§ 12, 13 PromO)
  9. Thesis defence (oral examination) (§ 15 PromO)
  10. Conferral of the doctorate in law (Dr. iur.)
